Loop People, Loop Places Speaker: Ginevra Ralph. Ginevra graduated from the University of Oregon with degrees in history and special education. She has been a disability rights advocate since the 1960’s and has taught students with profound cognitive and physical disabilities. In 2020 Ginevra received the 2020 HLAA “Get in the Hearing Loop” award. Ginevra will be following up on last month’s presentation given by Juliëtte Sterkens. February’s meeting will focus on the need for multiple additional strategies to enhance a hearing aid/ cochlear implants natural limitation. The presentation will also include how to take control of hearing better in our daily lives by using a personal hearing loop. Portable loops dramatically increase effective loop advocacy by instantly expanding the number and variety of places that are looped, as well as providing community outreach and education in an easy way. Ginevra will also be joined by Sue Prichard, Chair of the Loop Lane County Committee, who uses a personal loop daily.

This month’s HLAA – Santa Fe Chapter meeting will be hosted by Mr. Dennis Stidham from the New Mexico Commission for Deaf & Hard of Hearing (NMCDHH). He will be covering all their hard of hearing assistive listening devices and other equipment that is provided through their Telecommunication Equipment Distribution Program as a virtual booth presentation.
Sign Language Interpreter will be provided by the NM Commission for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Captioning will be available as well. In order to turn on the Closed Captioning (CC) feature at the bottom of the screen in Zoom, you will need to click it.

Court Interpreter Ethics in Remote Settings

Session Description:
The face of court interpreting is changing. In a world in which a global pandemic has caused most industries to drastically alter the way they do business to adapt to safety protocols and social distancing requirements, judicial interpreters now find themselves tasked with providing high-level services in a multitude of virtual settings using a diverse array of remote technology. Although the judicial interpreter’s professional responsibilities haven’t changed, the dynamic nature of the virtual environments within which interpreters now work often times presents previously uncontemplated ethical challenges that must be understood and, ultimately, overcome to safeguard the integrity of the judicial process. The main focus of this 2-hour webinar will therefore be to provide pragmatic knowledge and skills to practicing and aspiring court interpreters alike to assist them in making sound ethical decisions while plying their trade in a variety of unpredictable remote settings. During the live session, attendees will not only collaborate with the instructor to analyze the judicial interpreter’s ethical responsibilities in virtual settings, but will also apply what they learn by participating in numerous skits and hands-on exercise.
Presenter: Joshua C. Elliott, Executive Officer, Office of Language Access, Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts. Joshua is a Federally and State Certified Court Interpreter with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Murray State University and a Master of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Louisville. He has also been certified as a medical interpreter through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.

Hospital Safety for those with Hearing Loss
Elaine has been a member of the HLAA Board of directors since 2020 and has been President of the HLAA Chicago North Shore Chapter since 2016. She also spear- headed the Chapter’s “Panel Discussion: Hospital Safety for People with Hearing Loss Program” from 2016 to 2020. Elaine is the current chair of the HLAACommunication Access in Health Care Program. Elaine’s advocacy passion is hospital safety for those with hearing loss. In October of 2020 she spearheaded the sixth annual hospital safety program with multiple Chicago area hospitals and hospital systems. In this presentation Elaine will go over tips and suggestions for hospital advocacy, how the Chicago HLAA chapter began their Hospital Safety Program and the importance of self-advocacy. This presentation will allow you to be better prepared to advocate for yourself or for your loved one in a hospital or medical setting – You never know when you will need it.

We will be having a COVID-19 Vaccine and Individuals with Disabilities Town Hall virtual event on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
We know some of you have questions about COVID-19 and the COVID-19 Vaccine. So, we reached out to our community to find experts and community members to have them share their stories and expertise with you. We hope that with this event we can answer your questions and help clarify any misunderstandings, misinformation, mistrust, or anxiety about getting the vaccine.

A vaccine event with full access for the Disability Community will happen on April 26 and 27 from 10am to 5pm in Albuquerque. The event specifically for our Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, Deaf Plus, and Deaf Senior Community will be on Tuesday, April 27th. It will be at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center at 3315 Louisiana Blvd NE. on the southwest corner of Louisiana Blvd and Comanche Rd. The event will be a drive-through only event – you will remain in your vehicle the whole time. There will be another vlog on the process of the drive-through soon.
Interpreters will be on site Tuesday only, and assistive technology will be available both days, including FM Systems. The vaccine provided will be the Moderna vaccine, so you will receive an appointment to return on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 to get the booster vaccine.
